How Students Are 'Evolving' With Technology

A fascinating article from InsideHigherEd here. Amongst other things it notes that the usage of phones, social networks and VR environments may be hindering student progression and 'old' teaching methods in the classroom. Whilst I am interested in technology aiding learning and new ways of delivering content to improve learning experiences, can this really improve face-to-face? Somehow I don't see my Dissertation students being too impressed if I arrange tutorials online?!
